Julian Mack loves Toledo, his hometown. Julian Mack was born and raised here in Toledo, Ohio. Since a primary student riding the yellow bus to Hawkins Elementary School, Julian has always had a passion for defending and pursuing justice for those he perceives as being treated unfairly. Julian’s legacy of public service began with election to the McTigue Student Council. It was at this point, he began to develop an understanding of how the principles of government he learned in Social Studies worked together to make policy happen.
At the young age of 11, Julian experienced his first political campaign rally by going with his mom to the inaugural visit of Bill Clinton’s whistle stop campaign tour in downtown Toledo. Later he met Jack Ford and made such a positive impression that Mr. Ford offered to take Julian to the Ohio Statehouse to watch the Ohio Congress in action. While at Rogers High School, Julian was lauded by students and teachers doing well in athletics, academics and extracurricular activities while taking on leadership roles including election to the student council all 4 years of high school. Regardless of his growing popularity, Julian stayed humble always having a heart for the downtrodden. It was during this time Julian’s passion and vision for public service developed.
Julian was honored to be selected by Congressman Marcy Kaptur to hold a position in her “Youth For Democracy”. Upon graduation from Rogers, Julian attended Bowling Green State University. As a freshman, he was elected to the RSA, Resident Student Association, and was active in the Student Government Association and the Black Student Union. After transferring to the University of Toledo, Julian was tapped for involvement in student government and was elected President of the Lucas County College Democrats. It was in this role, Julian hosted the kickoff of Sherrod Brown’s 2006 U.S. Senate campaign at the University of Toledo. Since then, Julian has participated in numerous campaigns including those of U.S. Congressman Marcy Kaptur, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, former Toledo Mayors Jack Ford, Paula Hicks Hudson, and others. During President Obama’s 2008 campaign, Julian was responsible for training canvassers as part of Working America, an arm of the AFLCIO. Through his dedication and perseverance, Julian knocked 10,000 doors for the campaign! Julian worked as a Field Officer through For Our Future during Hilary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.
Julian’s role as an activist began with his initial call to the newly formed Black Lives Matter Movement in the summer of 2014 when he protested at Central and McCord daily during his lunchtime. He has diligently led most local Black Lives Matter protests with the Community Solidarity Response Network over the past 6 years including protests and rallies in Toledo, Maumee, Sylvania, Ottawa HIlls, and Perrysburg. A union brat, Julian’s dad is a member of the United Auto Workers and his mom is a member of the Toledo Federation of Teachers. Julian is not a novice to the legislative system of government participating in several prominent local legislative initiatives including Sensible Toledo, Move To Amend, and most notably the Lake Erie Bill of Rights.
Now the time has come for Julian to move from protest to policy, from community organizer to policy maker. Julian Mack loves Toledo, his hometown. He already believes Toledo is the best city in Ohio but wants to help propel our city to even higher heights. Julian wants to make Toledo the very best place to live, to work, to worship, to play, to raise a family, to retire. Julian is ready to use his passion and knowledge to advocate for all people in our city and make Toledo the best place in America to live, for everyone.
